Grounding Practices
Earthing
Grounding through physical Earth connection is simple and is not only a great way to connect you back to your physical space, but has emerging evidence for a myriad of health benefits. Benefits include improved sleep, stress, pain, inflammation, circulation, wound healing, regulating cortisol and the nervous system.
Take your shoes off, and walk, or stand in nature, for as little as 10 minutes, but ideally 20-30 minutes.
Many people also enjoy taking a swim in the ocean, a lake, or creek to immerse themselves in the healing energies of mother Earth.
5-4-3-2-1 Practice
This is a well-known Grounding practices which brings you back into the present moment, often used in a clinical setting, by people suffering from Anxiety, PTSD, or other mental health condition. Crystals to support self-soothing would be beneficial during periods of heightened Anxiety, including Amethyst of Rose Quartz.
During the 5-4-3-2-1 practice, you: Name 5 things you can see, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can smell, and 1 thing you can taste.
Roots Visualisation
If you are unable to connect with the Earth physically, a visualization practice is a great way to connect you back with the supporting energies of mother Earth. It would also be ideal to support this kind of practice with grounding crystals to enhance your experience.
Visualisation Practice
This is most beneficial when done with your feet placed firmly on the floor beneath you.
Begin by getting comfortable, closing your eyes, and slowing down your breath. Breathe slowly, deeply and steadily.
Image yourself in the forest. Your feet are bare, and you can feel the sensation of the cool Earth underneath your feet. You can smell the Earth, the grass, the trees, and hear the animals which surround you.
You feel the breezing touching your skin, and hear the wind circle around you.
You have an equal feeling of the Earth embracing you, pulling you into to herself, and the sky above holding you up, nurturing you in a state of balance with both energies.
Your attention returns to your feet, which begin to feel tingly and heavy, you would be unable to take a step even if you tried.
You feel the Earth calling you, and roots begin to slowly emerge from the soles of your feet, growing into the Earth, moving through her, until you reach a place of comfort, warmth, and love. You feel these energies create a bright light, and they moving up your roots into your body, coursing through you, and back down into the Earth, sharing these frequencies with her.
You begin to create a bubble of this bright Earth energy around your body, this expands, to surround you completely.
When you feel satisfied with this connection, like you have all which you need, you release the left over energies back to the Earth, and slowly return to yourself. You stand there for a moment, grateful for the Earth for all she has offered you. And she thanks you in return.
Your feet begin to feel lighter, and you know it is time for you to continue on. You take a few steps forward, and begin to come back to your physical body, slowly opening your eyes.
Body Scan
Another Grounding practice which can help bring you back to your physical body is a body scan, during which you focus intently on the physical sensations within your body.
This practice keeps you present, and is a great way to begin mindfulness practice, keeping your focus on the here and now, and to shut off the noise and distraction of your mind.
Body Scan Practice
Laying down is preferable for this practice.
Begin by getting comfortable, closing your eyes, and slowing down your breath. Breathe slowly, deeply and steadily.
Starting with your feet, take your attention to your toes, noticing any sensation, tingling or feeling.
You can curl your toes tightly, and then release, noticing any changes.
Slowly move your attention up your feet, feeling your arches, your heels, your ankles.
You might roll your ankles or take note of any sensations, clicking or tightness here.
Continue slowly up your calf, also paying attention to your shins, and can tense and release your muscles as you move up the leg, to the knee, and so on.
It is important to move your attention slowly throughout your entire body. You can tense and release throughout the practice, wherever you are drawn to do this.
Ensure you move your attention through your whole body, torso, back, heart space, arms, shoulders, neck, head, and face, taking time to release the jaw, the brow, and the forehead, paying attention not to rush the process.
There are a number of Grounding practices which you can explore, and I hope that you are able to find something that resonates with you, so that you too can feel nurtured by our sweet mother Earth, whenever you need her.
